Ferrari 599 GTO Wreck

Almost Everything's Wreck of the Day is a 2012 Ferrari 599 GTO (one of 599 built.) The driver sped through a blind turn at 4:30 AM and found a truck coming at him. He managed to avoid the truck but slid into a tree, a wall and a lamp post before coming to a stop. The driver walked away unhurt before the car burst into flames and burned to the ground.

24 Hours of Le Mans!

It's that time of year again, the oldest and greatest auto race in the world celebrates its 90th anniversary this weekend in Le Mans, France (June 23-24, 2013.) The race is fast and torturous. It is where the world's premier auto makers--Aston Martin, Audi, Chevrolet (Corvette), Chrysler (SRT Viper), Ferrari, Honda, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota--come to show not only that they have the fastest, best handling, most advanced cars but in order to win, they must also be reliable and economical.

The race attracts top drivers including celebrity Patrick Dempsey who in past years has been a LeMans class leader. Audi once again captured the pole in 2013. Toyota was third fastest in qualifying with a hybrid prototype.

Audi captures pole at 24 Heures du Mans in 2013
Unlike most races, these vehicles must run all-out for 24 hours straight without breaking down and with as few stops as possible. At 2013 speeds we can expect the leaders to travel more than 3000 miles (5000 km)
Aston Martin at 2013 24 Heures du Mans
NASCAR, Formula 1 and Indycar feature straights that can be a thousand feet long. LeMans features a straightaway that is 4 miles (6 km) long followed by a series of curves, hairpin turns and shorter straights.

Porsche at 2013 24 Heures du Mans
Corvette & Viper at 2013 24 Heures du Mans
It is our favorite race at Almost Everything because the cars look like real cars and the technology is often a few years away from making the cars we drive everyday safer, more fun and better performing.

Photos of 6 Exotic Cars Going Up In Flames

Almost Everything's Wreck of the Day is not one wreck but 6! A car carrier in Bangkok, Thailand was transporting a Ferrari, Lamborghini, 2 Bentleys, Mercedes and a BMW. One of the exotics caught fire while on the transporter (we're guessing the Lamborghini because they seem to spontaneously combust fairly frequently.) The fire spread to other cars while the truck was moving!

Thanks as always the the guys at WreckedExotics.com for our weekly dose of automotive mayhem!

Video of 2013 Ferrari "LaFerrari"

Beautiful car. Dumb name. Ferrari has unveiled the successor to the GTO, F40, F50 and Enzo and is calling it "LaFerrari." Which as far as we can tell is universally derided. Still, we wouldn't turn one down if offered to us. . . or if we had the $1.3M needed to buy one.

It's a hybrid and the most outrageous Ferrari to date:

  • 0-60 in less than 3 seconds
  • 220 mph top speed
  • 0963 HP
  • 665 lb-ft (900+ Nm) torque.

Video of Ferrari 458 Italia Blunder

This was not a good way to start the day. Some friends decided to make a video of their new Ferrari 458 Italia flying by. It didn't work quite as planned.

1995 Ferrari 348 vs Tree

Almost Everything's Wreck of the Day is a 1995 Ferrari 348 that was wrapped around a tree at high speed (yes, of course we meant the tree was speeding.) Amazingly, the driver walked away without any significant injuries. No word on how the tree fared or if drugs or alcohol were in the tree's system at the time of the collision. Police continue their investigation on rue Anatole in France.

Not Your Typical Off Road Vehicle

Almost Everything's Wreck of the Day is yet another Ferrari 458 Italia. We commend exotic car owners for actually using their cars instead of letting them wither in a garage. However, we think that this owner might do better to leave the car at home. May we suggest a Jeep, Land Rover or Land Cruiser for this type adventure? More fun and faster too!

Ferrari F40 Destroyed

This is downright painful to watch. Video of Almost Everything's Wreck of the Day: a Ferrari F40. Created to celebrate the Ferrari company's 40th anniversary and designed to be the world's greatest supercar. Only 1,315 were made from 1987 to 1992. Buyers reportedly paid anywhere from US $400,000 to US $1,600,000 and the cars still trade for that much today. WreckedExotics.com reports that the Ferrari was returning from a car show in Vancouver, Canada when the driver lost control in the rain and hit a pole. The car is valuable enough that it will probably be rebuilt but the video shows that there is a lot of work that will need to be done.

Ferrari Destroys 2 Stretch Limos in Japan

A driver in a brand new Ferrari lost control in downtown Tokyo and barreled into the back of a stretch limo. The driver was going so fast that the Ferrari pushed the limo into a second limo in front of the first.

$1M Ferrari Enzo Crash

Here's a goodie from our buddies at WreckedExotics.com. The driver of this million dollar Ferrari Enzo was on a Florida street when he or she (who are we kidding, it had to have been a guy who did this) lost control and wedged the car between a couple of poles on the wrong side of the street. WreckedExotics.com has lots more like this.

Ferrari FXX Crash at Laguna Seca

We didn't see this crash while we were at the track this month. It is supposed to be the first recorded crash of a Ferrari FXX (the $1.8 million street version of the Ferrari Enzo racing car.) According to our friends at WreckedExotics.com, it happened during a special "Ferrari Racing Days" event at Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca on May 22, 2011. The Ferrari went off the track at Turn 8 "The Corkscrew" and crashed into the tire wall.

Sebring 12 Hours Looks Like a NASCAR Race

Race winning Peugeot 908 at 2011 12 Hours of Sebring
Almost Everything Autobody watched the 59th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring on ESPN.  We thought we were watching a NASCAR event instead of American Le Mans. Endurance racing used to be tough enough without worring about other racers hitting you on purpose. No longer. Drivers bumped & grinded all 12 hours. Cars were destroyed, carried back to the pits, rebuilt and went back out on the track. Favorites from Audi & Ferrari were totaled allowing Peugeot to win overall for the 2nd year in a row and BMW to win the GT2 class.

Here's footage from one of the big crashes that took out the Ferrari 458:

Ferrari 458 Italia Totaled by Football/Soccer Star Louis Saha

Football/soccer star Louis Saha lost control of his 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia after he passed another car while exiting a tunnel on a busy road in England. The crash was at nearly the same spot where former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo also crashed a Ferrari in 2009. Saha barreled into fence on the driver's side of the car. Amazingly, he escaped without injury. The £170K ($275K USD) Ferrari was not so lucky. Saha currently plays forward for Everton in the English Premier League and also for the French National Team.

Thanks to WreckedExotics.com for keeping us up to date on very expensive crashes.
