Car of the Day - 1974 Ford Maverick Restoration

Ol' Buzzard after Restoration at Almost Everything Autobody
This 1974 Ford Maverick came to us in need of a restoration. The owner of the car, Don Schennek, has a heck on an engine and transmission in this car. Check under the hood at any number of local car shows to see it. But the outside of the car. . . well, let's be blunt, it was a bit chewed-up, rusty. . . ugly. Don had Almost Everything Autobody repair dents on the doors, quarter panels, roof, trunk and fenders. We also welded shut 42 holes around the car where old mouldings used to mount. Almost Everything Autobody repaired fiberglass cracks on the new "Grabber" hood. We treated the rust on the right and left quarter panels by welding in new metal and in some areas, rebuilt panels in fiberglass. Don changed the color from a dull orange to white. Don's "Ol' Buzzard" is a regular at Northern California auto shows and after his restoration, he received an invite to participate in the prestigious Classic & Custom Car Show in San Jose's McEnery Convention Center. Thanks for letting us work on this great car Don.

  1. I bought this car last year and after starting to make upgrades I found lots of flaws. The floor pan was patched together with tin cans and foam. The rear lower panels, door gutters, and back rockers are cracking. Rust stops are starting to show up on doors and roof. Very disappointed with this build.

    1. Thaxtondill, congratulations on your purchase and doing upgrades to the car! I remember it. It had a very mean engine from what I recall. The owner at the time had put a lot of money into the mechanicals and was trying to make the exterior look better on his remaining (very tight) budget. It came out looking nice and even did well at a number of car shows back in the day. That said, the article was written 5 years ago and the actual work was done about a year before that. We said in the article, "let's be blunt, it was a bit chewed-up, rusty. . . ugly." Sadly, we didn't to do any work to the floorpan, rockers or gutters and there was a lot of old bondo and rust on the car. So there was still more work to do after the exterior got painted. It's good to hear that this car is still going strong and has a new owner that continues to improve upon it. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help. Regards, Frank
